Amex 2/90
Amex · last reviewed 2026-04
Summary
Amex limits new credit card applications to 2 per rolling 90-day window. Charge cards (Platinum, Gold, Green) don't count.
High confidence: published in issuer terms and confirmed across thousands of community data points.
What it does
Amex restricts how often you can open new accounts. The current limit is 2 credit cards in any 90-day rolling window. Charge cards (Platinum, Gold, Green personal + business) are exempt. The 'Pop-up Jail' (a soft-deny modal saying you don't qualify for the bonus) is a separate, stricter behavior driven by other signals - 2/90 is the hard application limit.
How it works
- Only credit cards count: Blue Cash Preferred, Blue Cash Everyday, Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant, Delta SkyMiles cards, Business Plus, Business Cash, etc.
- Charge cards do NOT count: Personal Platinum, Gold, Green; Business Platinum, Gold, Green.
- The 90-day window is rolling, not calendar. If you opened a credit card 89 days ago and another 1 day ago, you cannot open a 3rd until day 90 + 1.
- The clock is by application approval date, not application date. A pending or denied application does not consume a slot.
What to do
- Stack charge cards (Plat + Gold + Green) freely - they're always 2/90-exempt.
- When you want a real credit card from Amex, batch them: 2 cards on day 0, then wait 90 days for the next batch.
- Watch for "5/24-style" Amex Pop-up Jail when chasing welcome bonuses; it's separate from 2/90 but feels similar from the user's side.
