Marriott 30-day cross-issuer rule
Cross-issuer · last reviewed 2026-06
Summary
Holding a Chase Marriott card opened in the last 30 days blocks the welcome bonus on Amex's personal Marriott cards (Brilliant, Bevy). One-directional - the reverse is not documented.
High confidence: published in issuer terms and confirmed across thousands of community data points.
What it does
Marriott's card lineup spans two issuers, and the issuers police each other's recent activity. If you opened a Chase Marriott card within the last 30 days, you are not eligible for the welcome bonus on Amex's personal Marriott cards (Bonvoy Brilliant, Bonvoy Bevy). The rule is one-directional: a recent Amex Marriott open is not documented to block anything at Chase. It sits alongside the broader cross-issuer 24-month rule - receiving ANY Marriott welcome or upgrade bonus from either issuer blocks Marriott-family bonuses across both issuers for 24 months from when that bonus posted.
How it works
- The 30-day trigger is the open date of the Chase Marriott card (Boundless, Bold, Bountiful), not the application or approval date.
- Only Amex's personal Marriott cards are blocked: Bonvoy Brilliant and Bonvoy Bevy. The Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex is exempt - its terms have not been updated to lock out recent Chase Marriott holders.
- One-directional: opening an Amex Marriott card does not start a 30-day block on Chase Marriott applications.
- The separate 24-month rule is symmetric: any Marriott bonus from Chase OR Amex blocks welcome bonuses across the whole Marriott family for 24 months from bonus posting.
What to do
- If you want both issuers' Marriott cards in a short span, open the Amex personal card first, or wait 31+ days after a Chase Marriott approval.
- Plan around the 24-month rule first - it is the binding constraint for most people. The 30-day rule only matters once the 24-month window is already clear.
- The Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex is the flexible piece: it is exempt from the 30-day block.
